TEN YEARS OF THE "QUEENS OF CHESS" TOURNAMENT

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the traditional chess tournament for girls, named "Queens of Chess," was held.

This year's tournament took place on Sunday, March 9th, at the "Milan Đ. Milićević" Elementary School. The girls competed in groups from first to fourth grade, with a total of 62 participants. Additionally, for girls in grades five through eight, as well as those who were unable to compete on Sunday, another tournament will be held later this month.

MEETING AT THE FACULTY OF PHILOLOGY TO DISCUSS PARTNERSHIP

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, representatives of the Studenica Foundation met at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade with the dean, Dr. Iva Draškić Vićanović, and Željka Janković, the student affairs coordinator.

The meeting focused on the cooperation between the Studenica Foundation and higher education institutions that train teaching and educational professionals, with the goal of restoring the reputation of these professions.

STUDENICA FOUNDATION – RECIPIENT OF THE PRESTIGIOUS TESLA SPIRIT AWARD

The Studenica Foundation and its late founder, Miroslav Michael Djordjević, received an award from the Tesla Science Foundation in Philadelphia at an event in New York.

On January 11, the Tesla Spirit Conference was held, and the award was received on behalf of the Studenica Foundation by Dušica Protić, emeritus member of the Board of Directors, and Dr. Veselin Sjekloća, advisor to the Foundation.

AWARD FOR PHILANTHROPY TO ALEX MACHASKEE

On January 2nd in Cleveland, the “Miroslav Michael Djordjevic” Philanthropy Award was officially presented to benefactor and philanthropist Alex Machaskee.

Advisor Dr. Veselin Sjekloća presented the award to Mr. Machaskee on behalf of the Studenica Foundation, traveling to Cleveland specifically for this occasion.

At the ceremony, a letter from the Djordjevic family, led by the president of the Foundation, Miroslav Djordjevic's daughter, Mari Shobe (Djordjevic), was read.

STUDENICA FOUNDATION AWARDED 43 SCHOLARSHIPS TO EXCELLENT SERBIAN STUDENTS

The Studenica Foundation awarded 43 scholarships to students from Serbia and the Republic of Srpska who achieved remarkable academic success during the previous year.

A formal contract signing ceremony was held at the Foundation's premises on December 27th.

In an effort to strengthen the reputation of the noble profession of teachers and educators, 12 scholarships were dedicated to students who chose these fields of study.

RESULTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST OF THE STUDENICA FOUNDATION FOR THE 2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR

Dear candidates, this year we have received nearly 500 of your applications. We appreciate the time and effort you dedicated.

We are proud to have so many young, talented, intelligent, and hardworking students in our community!

This year, we are awarding 43 scholarships.

CHESS TOURNAMENT IN HONOR OF MIROSLAV MICHAEL DJORDJEVIC

On December 1st, more than 60 children participated in the memorial chess tournament named after the founder of the Studenica Foundation, Miroslav Michael Djordjevic.

The tournament was organized by the "Delfin" Chess Club at the premises of the "Radnički" Chess Club in Belgrade.

Boys and girls from second to sixth grade competed in their chess-playing skills.

Miroslav Majkl Djordjevic was very fond of chess and supported the "Delfin" Chess Club through the Studenica Foundation.

A PHENOMENAL GALA CHARITY EVENING HELD BY THE STUDENICA FOUNDATION

The Gala Charity Evening of the Studenica Foundation, held on November 28 at the Aeroclub in Belgrade, had a fantastic atmosphere.

Elegant ladies in formal long gowns and distinguished gentlemen gathered with the goal of supporting the education of young and talented people.

ALEX MACHASKEE THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE PHILANTHROPY AWARD

The first recipient of the "Miroslav Michael Djordjevic" Philanthropy Award is Alex Machaskee, a businessman of Serbian descent who lives in the United States.

The award, named after the founder of the Studenica Foundation, was officially presented to Machaskee in Cleveland on January 2.

Alex Machaskee was born in America. He built a successful business career in Ohio, but has also been consistently engaged in humanitarian work.

The name of the first recipient of the “Miroslav Majkl Đorđević” Philanthropy Award will be revealed on November 28 at the Gala Charity Evening at the Aeroclub.

The “Miroslav Majkl Đorđević” Award was established this year and is presented to distinguished individuals from Serbia or of Serbian descent worldwide for exceptional acts of philanthropy and charity that have made a broad positive impact on Serbian society.

OPEN CALL FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE 2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Studenica Foundation has announced a call for student scholarships for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The application period is open from September 18 to October 30, 2024.

Scholarships are available to Serbian students in universities in the Republic of Serbia and the surrounding region.

Students from all years of undergraduate and master's programs, across all fields of study—including social sciences, humanities, biomedical sciences, technical sciences, and the arts—are encouraged to apply.

WITNESS THE CREATION OF OUR PHILANTHROPY AWARD SCULPTURE

After collecting natural elements, the sculpture is crafted in beeswax using casts of real branches and fruits, as well as taking and preserving natural prints of oak, walnut, plum, cherry and raspberry leaves.

Due to the inherent methodology of creating such works and the individual assembly of all separate elements, each sculpture part is unique, making every sculpted piece distinct and especially valuable.

ANNUAL MEETING OF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2024

As part of the annual gathering of our scholarship recipients, we visited the exhibition "Emotional Maps" by our alumna and artist, Professor Vesna Pavlovic, at the Center for Cultural Decontamination.

After the exhibition visit, we exchanged impressions about the past academic year and continued socializing.

We are particularly pleased that this year's gathering symbolically marked the encounter of our current scholarship recipients with the inspiring creativity of our alumna.

Unity and mutual support among all members of the Studenica Foundation are the foundation of our work.

THE ALUMNI FOUNDATION STUDENICA 2024 GATHERING HELD

A large gathering of alumni of the Studenica Foundation took place at the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade on Thursday, June 20th. The gathering was highly successful, featuring constructive discussions about the future of our alumni network.

Following a warm welcome and inspiring speeches, we visited Milutin Milankovic's salon in the Rectorate Building. The evening continued with a pleasant atmosphere, drinks, and music in the courtyard.

One of the key conclusions of the gathering was that the regular organization of such events plays a crucial role in strengthening our alumni community.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF MIROSLAV MICHAEL DJORDJEVIC

Miroslav Michael Djordjevic (1936-2023), a remarkable Serbian philanthropist and patriot, departed from us a year ago.

Today, the Studenica Foundation establishes the "Miroslav Michael Djordjevic" award, honoring new champions of philanthropy, prominent Serbian benefactors from Serbia and around the world, for their altruism, compassion, solidarity, patriotism, and community care.

''QUEENS OF CHESS": TRADITIONAL TOURNAMENT GATHERS 60 GIRLS IN A CHESS COMPETITION

At "Milan Đ. Milićević" Primary School in Medaković 3, on Sunday, March 31st, a chess tournament for girls named "Queens of Chess" was held, bringing together 60 students from the early grades of Belgrade's elementary schools.

The tournament has been organized for the ninth year in a row by the ''Delfin'' chess club under the auspices of the Studenica Foundation, aiming to promote women's chess and empower girls.

In pursuit of enhancing education and restoring respect for teaching professions, the Studenica Foundation has allocated over 8 million dinars this year.

"VIDOVDANSKI SABOR"

The traditional Vidovdan Assembly was held on July 1 and 2, 2023, in the House of the National Assembly in Belgrade. The assembly was attended by 250 delegates of the Serbian diaspora, and in front of the "Studenica Foundation" were manager Marina Tomović and senior adviser Vuka Jeremić.

The organizer is the Cabinet of the Minister without portfolio in charge of coordinating activities and measures in the field of relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Diaspora, that is, the Minister of the Diaspora, Đorđe Milićević.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE BEST CANDIDATES AT THE ADMISSSION EXAMS FOR TEACHING PROFFESIONS

The Studenica Foundation has sent letters to all faculties in Serbia that educate young generations about teaching professions for the next academic year 2023/24. to put a special emphasis on scholarships for students of these faculties, in order to encourage future students to opt for these noble professions.

The letter states that the Studenica Foundation, which has been dedicated to the affirmation of knowledge, learning, and improvement for thirty years, wants to provide its concrete contribution to the effort to restore the reputation of the teaching profession.

In the first episode of the podcast, entitled "Why is it nice to enroll in Law?", the guest was a professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Belgrade, Valentina Cvetković Đorđević, a former scholarship holder of the Foundation. Tijana Glišović, a student at the Faculty of Law and this year's scholarship recipient, talked to the professor about her studies and everything that comes after her studies.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE FOUNDATION, MIROSLAV MAJKL ĐORĐEVIĆ, PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 87

Mr. Đorđević was born in Belgrade in 1936, where he lived until his departure to the USA in 1956. In addition to a very successful professional career in American business and political circles, he was recognized as a Serbian benefactor and persistent fighter for the progress of Serbian society and the Serbs as a nation. His outstanding and dedicated work on numerous philanthropic initiatives was crowned by the foundation and decades of successful management of the Studenica Foundation through stormy and challenging times.

Members, alumni of the Foundation, and scholarship holders are grateful for all the help that Mr. Đorđević selflessly provided. He was a proud successor of the Serbian endowment tradition and history will remember him as a great man and a Serb. We at this moment thank him once again for everything he has done for us and our homeland.

In accordance with the decision of the Đorđević family, the funeral was held on 5/24/2023 in San Rafael, in the family circle.

CHESS QUEENS HELD

On Sunday, March 26, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade, the eighth traditional youth chess tournament for students of Belgrade elementary schools was held. The event called "QUEENS OF CHESS" has been held since 2016 in the organization of the chess club "Delfin". He's at the tournament over 100 girls participated, divided into age categories.

The little chess queens were greeted by Alisa Marić, celebrated grandmaster, legend of Serbian chess.

DELEGATION OF THE STUDENICA FOUNDATION AT THE AWARDING OF THE "MARKO JARIĆ" AWARD

This year's winner of the "Marko Jarić" award is physicist Milorad V. Milošević. He was presented with an award in the Banquet Hall of SANU. He was awarded for scientific achievements on superconductors.
The delegation of the "Studenica" Foundation attended this event. After the ceremony and the lecture, the scholars talked with the award winner and took a photo.

Milorad V. MiloševIć graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade, and received his doctorate in Belgium, where he is still working and improving scientifically. Milošević donated the prize fund to his primary and secondary school in Smederevo.

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STUDENICA FOUNDATION SPOKE WITH PRESIDENT OF SANU

The delegation of the Studenica Foundation visited the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts on February 24, 2023. The President of SANU Dr. Vladimir Kostić hosted our representatives.

They discussed potential cooperation and projects on which the Studenica Foundation could work with the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. It was agreed that a meeting would be held again in April, where all the details will be specified.

The conclusion of the conversation is that both our Foundation and SANU found common ground. The cooperation would be beneficial for both of them, and would especially be important to Foundation's scholarship holders who are interested in doing science, training, and developing a career in that direction.

CULTURAL EVENT "KRALJICE SAHA"

This year, the Studenica Foundation supports the event for young female chess players - "Kraljice saha" (Chess Queens). The event is organized for the eighth time in a row as a traditional women's chess tournament on International Women's Day. The organizers aim to affirm chess as a game that supports the accelerated development of creative intelligence, and cognitive and leadership abilities in children, as well as in the transfer of learning and knowledge to other scientific fields.

We are glad that we can, as a Foundation that has been working in the advancement of young people for many years, support our youngest, and convince them how important it is to develop from an early age in fields that significantly affect the improvement of their abilities and intellectual capabilities.

NY GALA FOR SERBIAN STUDENTS

Friday's 2022 Serbian Philanthropic Association sold out Gala was a huge success. Congratulations to the Board and their team of volunteers.

What effort this must have taken! Zdravko Colic was entertaining the guests; young girls in Serbian costumes handing our zito; Serbs in gorgeous dresses and tuxes, attended not just from NY but from all over, and most importantly we raised about $100,500 for Studenica Foundation scholarships for Serbian students from Serbia and the region.

On November 4 Serbs in NY and even across the US are gathering in New York City for some fun and good works for Studenica Foundation.

The Serbian Philanthropic Association (the SPA) is hosting its third Gala Black Tie event in New York City on November 4. The SPA then donates the funds to a chosen US-registered Serbian charity. This year we are delighted that it has chosen to fundraise for the Studenica Foundation which has for decades now given scholarships to outstanding students from Serbia to further their university education.

Srboljub Srba Lukić, a well-known Serbian businessman and artist, widely successful in Finland, opened a sales exhibition of his works last week.

VIRTUAL EVENT 2022, SERBS AROUND THE WORLD

The Studenica Foundation participated in an event called the Great Virtual event of the Serbian Diaspora from around the world, organized by SAN magazine from Toronto, which lasted from March 4 to 6, 2022.

They talked about Serbian culture, its preservation in the diaspora and about connecting and cooperating both individuals and organizations from the Serbian diaspora. We have heard performances of numerous songs and ethno songs, which our tradition inherits, performed by choirs from the diaspora.

The seventh traditional women's chess tournament "Queen of Chess" with general sponsorship of the Studenica Foundation

On Sunday, March 6, 2022, in the ceremonial hall of the Belgrade municipality of Vračar, the seventh traditional women's chess tournament "Queen of Chess" was held, with general sponsorship of the Studenica Foundation.

Over two hundred talented chess players, pupils of Belgrade primary schools, took part in the event, which were divided into several age categories.

MEETING OF ALUMNI IN SWITZERLAND

Jelena and Helena, apart from similar affinities in education, were united in Switzerland by the fact that they were both our scholarship holders through undergraduate and master's academic studies.

This month, we were delighted with the news of the meeting of two of our alumni in Switzerland, where they are both attending PhD studies at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne University. Jelena Janković and Helena Miljković are successful young girls who have continued to build their academic careers at a world-renowned university. Apart from the fact that they are united by education and similar affinities, through the conversation they came to the conclusion that another common point is that they were both scholarship holders of the Studenica Foundation. Jelena had been receiving a scholarship until 2016, and Helena until last year.

ALEKSANDAR KOVAČEVIĆ - JOINED THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF OUR FOUNDATION

Studenica Foundation is very pleased to announce that Aleksandar Kovacevic has joined the Board of Directors of our foundation.

Aleksandar was born in Belgrade in Serbia and he continued his higher education at the California State University East Bay (CSUEB) where he has Bachelor’s degree in Finance, and Major in Business Administration.

Studenica scholarship competition has been closed and the awarded students have been selected. We thank everyone who applied for the competition. It is an honour to have the opportunity to get in touch with such talented and successful young people.

As every year, the decision about which candidates will get our scholarship was extremely difficult, because there are far more candidates who deserve a Studenica Foundation scholarship than the number of scholarships we award.

PRESENTING OUR FELLOWS: JOVANA JOVIĆ, A YOUTH LEADER

Jovana Jović is one of the first freshmen of the Studenica Foundation.

She founded the Youth Vibes portal, a youth media portal for which high school and university students from the Balkans write. The main headquarters of the editorial office are located in Nis.

This portal was founded with the aim of influencing the development of youth activism and strengthening the youth community through the production and placement of media content for young people, as well as the implementation of workshops, conferences, trainings and other interactive and educational programs in the field of information and media literacy.

PRESENTING OUR FELLOWS: MILAN ĐORĐEVIĆ, A TALENTED SCIENTIST

This summer, our fellow Milan Đorđević undertook a four-month-long internship in the prestigious Keyser laboratory as a part of the “Amgen Scholars Programme – University of Cambridge”.

KeyserLab is part of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in which Watson and Crick discovered the secondary structure of DNA which was one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century honored by a Nobel Prize. Through this program, he has conducted a research project in the field of DNA nanotechnology under the name of “Computationally-aided optimization for efficient DNA assembly at the nanoscale”, which he also had a chance to present during the program. In collaboration with scientists from Keyser laboratory, he also took part in another research project in the DNA nanotechnology field which resulted in a scientific paper that is currently in a process of publication.

The year that is behind us, no matter how difficult it was, showed us that our fellows are ready to progress and be successful even while dealing with obstacles.

YOUNG ACTRESS RECEIVES "LITTLE PRINCE" AWARD

Sara Simović, a fellow of the Studenica Foundation, is this year's winner of the "Little Prince" award for the drama department of the Academy of Arts from Novi Sad.

FINAL CONFERENCE "BELGRADE MODEL OF THE US SENATE" HELD IN MAY

The final conference of the project "Belgrade Model of the American Senate" was successfully held on May 16, 2021.

In October 2020, the Center for International Public Policy started implementing the project "Belgrade Model of the US Senate" , under the auspices of the United States Embassy, with the support of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade and the USA Studies Center.

EXPERIENCE FROM OUR ALUMNI - SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDIES IN THE USA

Sandra Davidović, President of the Alumni Board of the Studenica Foundation, gave a presentation to young students from Serbia and the region about scholarships and studies in the USA.

Sandra emphasized the importance of researching and choosing the right scholarship and how important it is to start on time, considering that the applications are mostly in the summer.

She spoke to the audience about her experiences and gave practical advice. She also offered her help to all who will apply for scholarships and studies.

CHESS QUEENS - GIRLS TOURNAMENT HELD ON APRIL 18th

The "Chess Queens" competition, after two delays due to the epidemiological situation, was held on Sunday, the 18th of April.

It was the final tournament of young female chess players, students of Belgrade primary schools, which was organized as part of the celebration of the International Women's day.

SECOND LECTURE OF OUR VITUAL ACADEMY

The Studenica Foundation continues the project developed in cooperation with this year's fellows - "Virtual Academy - Education for the 21st Century".

After the first successful lecture given by journalist Zoran Stanojević which was attended by over 70 participants, the audience will be addressed by Sandra Davidović, President of the Alumni Board of the Studenica Foundation.

"MARKO JARIĆ" AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENTS IN PHYSICS FOR 2020.

The foundation “Prof. Dr. Marko V. Jarić" announced the winner of the award for physics "Marko Jarić" for 2020 on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 12:39; clock on the Zoom platform.

This prestigious award, which has been awarded for more than two decades by the Foundation "Prof. Dr. Marko V. Jarić”, is also known in the domestic media as the“ Serbian Nobel Prize in Physics ”.

THE FIRST LECTURE OF OUR VIRTUAL ACADEMY WAS SUCCESSFUL!

The first lecture of our virtual academy was successfully held on Thursday, February 11.

The lecture was given by the journalist and editor of the RTS internet portal, Zoran Stanojević, and he spoke about the skill of online public speaking.

The lecture was attended by over 65 participants, among whom were scholarship holders of the Studenica Foundation, but also professors and participants from the region.

After the prepared presentation, a discussion with the audience began, which was useful and interesting for everyone and lasted longer than expected.

THE FIRST VIRTAUL ALUMN CONFERENCE WAS SUCCESSFUL

The first virtual alumni conference was held on December 1 at 6 pm on the Microsoft Teams platform.

Almost 80 alumni attended, and the conference was opened by the president and founder of the Studenica Foundation, Miroslav Michael Djordjevic.

Mr. Djordjevic greeted everyone present and said that of all the successes he had in his life, the biggest part was that he founded the Foundation and that he could contribute to the development of education and help young people in Serbia and the region.

We plan to get together after so much time, to meet younger colleagues and reminisce about our student days with old friends, as well as to help our Foundation continue to develop and last for a long time.

This gathering will be online, a virtual alumni conference which is planned for December 1st of this year.

Chess is extremely important for children's development, and research shows that it is directly related to success in school. This is why we are expanding our "Queens of Chess" project.
