Path to success - Emilija Jovanović
As a Foundation, we like to look back together with our fellows on their achievements in the previous academic year, and summarize all the good things that happened.
Emilija Jovanović, as our scholarship holder in the previous year, shares her most significant ideas and activities that she implemented in the past year.
Last year, after receiving a scholarship, Emilija was selected to work on the SENSOGENE project at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering. It is a project whose main focus is the early detection of colorectal cancer, and as such it has a great potential impact on the community. The good results allowed her to participate in the international congress of the Serbian Cancer Research Society as one of the youngest participants. Emilija had the opportunity to publish her abstract in the book of abstracts and to present her work in the form of a poster presentation. He is currently writing a paper that will soon be published in one of the international journals.
In addition to the aforementioned laboratory, she also volunteered at the Center for Human Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Biology. In addition to the experiments she did every day, Emilija was also involved in the implementation of the teaching program at the university as a student demonstrator in the compulsory course Molecular Biology of Eukaryotes, trying to make sure that students master the theoretical and practical aspects of the course in exercises. In addition, Emilija was one of the lecturers at the optional one-semester course for interested students, whose goal is to bring molecular biology and scientific work closer to interested students. As part of the show "5 minutes of biology", Emilija was involved in the project as an author and presenter, all for the purpose of promoting science.
In addition to science itself, Emilija continues to promote science as one of the founders of the Student Section for Molecular Biology. He proudly points out that the past period was very successful for the section. In addition to jointly organizing lectures by Nobel laureates for students, they managed to provide them with internships and organize numerous workshops. For her contribution, Emilija was praised by the society for molecular biology at the ceremony on the occasion of the first 50 years of molecular biology in Serbia.
Along with the wonderful experience of working in the laboratory and at the university, as well as promoting science, one of the most significant events for Emilija was the awarding of the Saint Sava Award. She was awarded for her outstanding contribution to scientific research in the field of molecular biology and physiology. During her studies, accolades kept pouring in, and Emilija was awarded another important Svetozar Milić award, which is given for outstanding contribution to science and education.
As the crown of all activities in the past period, Emilija graduated and enrolled in doctoral studies. On August 17, 2022, she officially enrolled in doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge!
We wish Emilija endless happiness at one of the best universities in the world, and to continue with great successes in science, representing Serbian students in the best light!
