Education is a lifelong process. It essentially has two aspects: the school of everyday existence and formal, academic structures of learning.  It begins with our birth and ends with our death. Education has three great phases of learning, encompassing three fundamental aspects of our living: physical, mental and spiritual.

RATIONALE OF OUR FOUNDATION

Both our Serbian and American experience attests to the invaluable and irreplaceable role education plays in the progress of society. The Serbs revere St. Sava not only as a promoter of peace but also as an active inspiring educator. Similarly, for America’s Founding Fathers, education and learning were at the cornerstone of the nation’s development. Тhe productivity of knowledge at America’s distinguished centers of higher learning – the universities – together with the ability to find practical application of this knowledge in a wide variety of fields, are a hallmark of American civilization.

The twentieth century, with its brutal world and local wars, totalitarian ideologies and economical determinism and exploitation, has led to the destruction of both material and spiritual values. Now in the new century, we are more than ever in need of recovering, as well as vigorously promoting, those moral and spiritual values that have been ravaged yet are the most fundamental prerequisites in the pursuit of life, liberty, and the just and equitable progress for all humankind.

The Founders have believed in the integrated holistic and generic approach and process to education.  This belief is further described and stated in the part ABOUT EDUCATION.

About education

Milutin Janjic, lecturer at UC Berkley

"Dear Pamela,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to you know that I am done with my Spring semester. You should got my transcript and dean's letter in few days.

In January and April I attended two conferences and presented my papers and they were accepted positively. These are the conferences:

1. Annual American Association of Slavic Teachers Conference in Chicago;

2. Annual American Comparative Languages Conference in NYC.

Also in a month one of my previous works will be published in a Swiss journal:
"Models of Personal Conversion in Russian Cultural History of the 19th and 20th Centuries”, ed. Jens Herlth (Bern: Peter Lang, Series “Interdisciplinary Studies on Central and Eastern Europe”).

I also would like to inform you that next academic year 2014/2015 is planning to be the year of completing my doctoral studies. I am planning to graduate (God willing that everything will be good) in May 2015. I will inform you about the process on regular base. I hope the Studenica Foundation and Mr. Djordjevich will continue with supporting my studies next academic year offering me a chance to see that the dream becomes reality.

One more time I would like to express my gratitude for your generosity.

Please send my greetings to Mr. Djordjevich.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Milutin Janjic"

BIOGRAPHY

Milutin Janjic is one of our top students. After finishing the Saint Sava Seminary - the oldest school in Belgrade - he went on to receive a BA in Orthodox Christian Studies at the Sankt-Petersburg's Orthodox Christian Theological Academy. This was followed by a MA in Missions/Missionary Studies and Missiology at the Graduate Theological Union which was founded in 1962 and is affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently doing his PhD studies at the same University and working as a lecturer at UC Berkley teaching BSC (Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian) language.

Below is a letter we received from him updating us on his latest achievements and plans. We are proud to be helping such a truly nice and good human being in pursuing his education and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Ana Đuričić, a talented young scientist and engineer

BIOGRAPHY

Ana Đuričić is one of the most prominent last year's Studenica Foundation scholarship students. She was born in Zaječar in 1988. She graduated high-school in Kruševac, with the „Vukova diploma“ award. She finished her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics, with an average grade of 9.35 passing all exams in the first term, and she finished her Masters studies at the same University with an average grade of 10.00.

During and after her studies, Ana took part in professional internships on prestigious technical Universities abroad: at the University of Madrid Carlos III in Spain, at the University of Naples Frederico II in Italy, at the Lisbon Technical University in Portugal, at the Federal Institute of Education Science and Technology in Brazil, at the Vienna Technical University in Austria, and on the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. As part of the student exchange in 2010 she attended the Torino Polytechnics University in Italy.

Today, Ana works as an assistant on the project "Smart-Geology for the World’s largest fossil oyster reef" at the Technical University in Vienna within the Faculty for Mathematics and Geoinformations, where she's simultaneously attending her PhD studies in the research group photogrammetry and distance detection.

For the second time in a row, she will participate at a large European summit of geoscientists - European Geosciences Union General Assembly. The presentation of her work "Parameter Estimation of Fossil Oysters from High Resolution 3D Point Cloud and Image Data" will be held on April 29th 2014 at the Austria Center (http://www.egu2014.eu/). She published her results previously at conferences in Brazil, Germany and Austria. As the biggest successes in her career so far, Ana cites the presentation of her results in the field of laser scanning and automatic detection from 3D point clouds at the Leibniz University in Hanover in Germany, the publication of her scientific research work at the IFSULDEMINAS symposium in Brazil, as well as the award for the best Masters degree work at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Civil Engineering, department for geodesics and geoinformatics in 2013 on the subject of Extraction of Forest Roads from Full-waveform Airborne Laser Scanning Data. Apart from these, she received numerous other international awards, like the ORACLE Academy diploma, the Republic of Austria OeAD-GmbH scholarship for international mobility and cooperation in education, science and research work, and the DAAD scholarship for professional internship in Germany in the field of 3D laser scanning from unmanned aerial vehicles and the development of algorithms for automatic object detection. She is also the recipient of the prestigious scholarship from the Studenica Foundation, and local scholarships from the Ministry of Science and Education, the Ministry of Sport and Youth and the Foundation for cultivating young talents of the city of Kruševac.

Along with her science and education work, Ana puts a lot of importance on the transfer of knowledge, experience, promotion of science and latest technical achievements among younger generations through the activity of the following organizations: OeAD, DAAD, the student parliament of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, the Board of European Students of Technology, IAESTE, and The Earth Science Women’s Network.

In addition to being a creative and successful engineer, Ana is fluent in multiple world languages, owns a brown belt in Karate (Shotokan), won a gold medal at the Jiu Jitsu competition in the federal state Minas Gerais in Brazil 2012, and won a bronze medal at the table tennis tournament in Strazbourg, France in 2013. Living in Brazil, Germany and Austria enriched Ana’s way of perceiving life, science, and other cultures. “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough” – Mae West.

The Stella Jatras scholarship for 2016 was awarded to Andrijana Taskov for her essay “The first Serbian woman philosopher – the path of Ksenija Atanasijevic”.

“It is important that we as a society remember certain individuals and write about them, so that they can become a potential role model and inspiration for the youth, who can find themselves lost in contemporary events. This is why a scholarship under the name of Stella Jatras is important. It honors Stella Jatras and other remarkable women who dedicated their efforts to values such as truth, freedom, equality, knowledge. Also, the scholarship’s monetary reward is valuable financial support to future specialization and professional advancement.” ~ Andrijana Takaskov

SCHOLARSHIP STELLA JATRAS

Dear students,

It is our great pleasure to publish the list of the 2015/16 scholarship awarded by the Studenica Foundation from San Francisco.

It was a tough task to choose forty one winners among the many brilliant students who applied. We strove to encompass as many different Faculties and as many different cities as possible. Priority was given to students on their final year of studies, followed by students who are already receiving Studenica Foundation’s scholarship, and a few scholarships were awarded in lieu of the student’s difficult financial situation, or for their social engagement.

We call on third year students with exceptional social engagement and success in their studies, who applied in great numbers, to try again next year.

Our congratulations to the winners, and congratulations to all others for their excellent results, we hope next year they might be among the winners.

We call on the scholarship winners to follow the Foundation’s website www.en-studenica.org. The date and manner of signing the scholarship contract and receiving the scholarship will be published in the following days.
