A Century of the "Svetozar Marković" University Library in Belgrade

The "Svetozar Marković" University Library in Belgrade, the central Serbian scientific library, is celebrating one hundred years of existence this year. For the scholars of the Studenica Foundation, this institution represents a second home – a place of learning, research and intellectual growth.

The library was built in 1926 as the first building in Serbia designed and constructed exclusively for library purposes. The funds for its construction were provided by the renowned Carnegie Foundation, a testament to the international significance this institution held from its very beginnings.

Since its founding, its mission has been to collect domestic and foreign literature in all formats and across all scientific fields, in order to meet the academic, scientific and research needs of students, professors and scholars at the University of Belgrade and other universities throughout Serbia.

One hundred years later, the University Library remains a pillar of Serbian science and culture – and a source of pride for all those who have found their path to knowledge within its halls.
