ALEX MACHASKEE THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE PHILANTHROPY AWARD
The first recipient of the Studenica Foundation "Miroslav Michael Djordjevic" Philanthropy Award is Alex Machaskee, a businessman of Serbian descent who lives in the United States.
The award, named after the founder of the Studenica Foundation, will be officially presented to Machaskee in Cleveland on January 2.
This recognition was established this year and is awarded to distinguished individuals from Serbia or those of Serbian descent worldwide for exceptional acts of philanthropy and charity, through which they have made a broader positive impact on Serbian society. Alex Machaskee was born in the United States. He built a successful business career in Ohio, but he has also been constantly engaged in humanitarian work.
He is a graduate of Cleveland State University with a bachelor's degree in marketing. Mr. Machaskee was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Cleveland State University in 1995, from the University of Akron in 1998, from Heidelberg College in 2006 and from St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in 2019.
He was inducted into the Northeast Ohio Business Hall of Fame in 2001 and inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame by the Press Club of Cleveland in 2006. In 2010 Mr. Machaskee was inducted into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame and the Cleveland State University Nance College of Business Hall of Fame.

Mr. Macaskee is an "Honorary Trustee for Life" of the Musical Arts Association of the Cleveland Orchestra and is a past Chairman of International Orthodox Christian Charities. He is an Emeritus Board Member of the Cleveland Museum of Art and University Circle Inc. and past Chairman of the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. He is a member of the Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations. Mr. Macaskee was a member of the Board for St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York for 20 years, where it was bestowed upon him in May 2019, the degree of Doctor of Human Letters.
Through the Serbian Church and numerous humanitarian organizations that he himself leads, he has helped many, particularly the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, where he provided long-term food assistance for 2,300 people daily.
As Chairman of International Orthodox Christian Charities, Mr. Macaskee has traveled to Greece, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Tbilisi, Beirut, Damascus, Jerusalem, Amman, Ethiopia and Cameroon to oversee the organization's humanitarian efforts.
For his humanitarian work, he has received numerous honors, including the Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
He has worked to improve the reputation of Serbia in the world. He founded the Serbian Garden in Cleveland, a prestigious piece of land where the history of Serbia and statues of Serbian giants are exhibited.
He is also the organizer and philanthropist of many meetings between American and Serbian entrepreneurs.
The award recipient will be presented with a sculpture symbolizing charity and philanthropy, designed by young artist and Bogdan Đukanović Foundation alumnus.
His work is a particularly artistic piece. He conceived and created a wall sculpture of bronze on stone, based on an oak branch, from which Serbian plum, cherry, walnut, and raspberry with fruits are grafted, symbolizing good deeds built upon each other. You can read more HERE.
The Studenica Foundation has also awarded a special recognition this year to the editorial team of the Diaspora Program at Radio Television Serbia (RTS).
In the explanation for the special award, it was noted that the RTS Diaspora Program is the only one in the domestic media space that has been continuously informing and strengthening the connection between the homeland and the diaspora for over 30 years.
